Driving Home a Better Future in the Connected Car

May 17th, 2012

In the future cars will be shared, able to avoid traffic and, above all, driverless.

Or at least that’s the hope of several of the speakers at last week’s MLOVE conference in Monterey.

Looking the furthest into the future was Brad Templeton, a consultant to Google and former head chairman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Templeton outlined the impact that driverless cars could have — from fewer traffic deaths to lower emissions to less space allotted for roads and parking.

Just reducing the 34,000 annual car-related deaths in the U.S. should be reason enough to go driverless replica watches, but Templeton notes it would also allow for fewer cars, that could be available on demand and take up less space.

“Human drivers are really kind of bad,” Templeton said.

While much of Templeton’s talk focused on the big shifts that could come years down the road, cars are already changing in more subtle ways.

Di-Ann Eisnor of Waze talked about how crowdsourced traffic replica watches, like that from her company, could save drivers 10 minutes a day — meaningful savings that means less carbon dioxide pumped into the air and less money spent at the pump.

Meanwhile, Getaround founder Jessica Scorpio talked about the impact of sharing rides in taking cars off the road. Cars sit idle 92 percent of the time — a figure that could be reduced, if people shared an expensive asset that isn’t being used most of the time.

“Why not connect people who own cars with people who need them,” Scorpio said. That is just what Getaround has done, at least in a few cities, where users can sign up and borrow cars from those with excess wheels.

Even those driverless cars are closer than many people realize. Of course, there are those Google test cars we hear about. But there are standard cars on the road that can help stay in a lane, park a car and avoid hitting objects.

Car sharing, Templeton notes, has the potential to do more than just take a few cars off the road. We already know how to make electric cars, he said, and we have for some time. The challenge, as Templeton sees it, is to make electric cars that people actually want to buy. But if such cars could just come on demand, drivers (or I guess, passengers), wouldn’t care how long that car might have needed to charge before it became available.

Similarly, one could get the car they need for each trip. Today replica watches, most car trips are made with a single passenger. At the same time, most of those trips are being taken in vehicles like SUVs and five-passenger sedans, because buyers purchase the car they need when their needs are the greatest. Shifting to a sharing-based system could open up the door for vehicles that take up half as much space, saving time, money, fuel and pollution.

Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch to Face Primary Challenge

May 17th, 2012

Utah’s senior Senator Orrin Hatch won’t be sailing to a seventh and final term without first facing a primary challenge after the state’s Republicans on Saturday denied him the nomination by the narrowest of margins.

Hatch, 78, will now face off against former Utah State Sen. Dan Liljenquist, 37, in a primary battle on June 26.

At Utah’s state Republican convention Saturday a slate of 10 GOP candidates in the senate race faced off. To avoid a primary battle and coast straight to his party’s nomination, Hatch would have had to receive 60 percent of the vote from the 4,000 delegates selected to attend the convention.

Candidates went through two rounds of voting. Hatch received 57 percent of the vote in the first round, while Liljenquist got 28 percent. The candidates who placed in the bottom eight were eliminated, and Hatch and Liljenquist competed head to head in a second round. Hatch received 59 percent of the vote in this round–just shy of that magic 60 percent. Liljenquist received 41 percent, seemingly picking up support from backers of Hatch’s other opponents.

Hatch, who has served in the Senate for 34 years, had been preparing for this battle for the past two years Buy Tattoo Machine, after his colleague Bob Bennett, a fellow veteran of Congress, was eliminated from his Senate battle at the state’s Republican convention in 2010.

Hatch Tattoo Ink Colors, who is the 24th longest-serving senator in US history, has spent $5 million in his primary battle, and he still has $3 million in his war chest.

Hatch’s strong fundraising thus far Tattoo Kits On Sale, along with his strong performance at the convention, bode well for the senator, who has had a history of reaching across the aisle. Hatch may also benefit from a larger electorate participating in the June 26 Republican primary. Fellow Mormon Mitt Romney is running in the GOP primary in this most Mormon of states and turnout is expected to be large.

Films for Your Soul ‘Riding the Invisible’ (WATCH

May 17th, 2012

I remember the first time a movie spoke to my soul. I was working as a creative consultant and invited to preview a preliminary edit of Emmy Award-winning director Jan Nickman’s film Echoes of Creation. As I sat in the studio, pinching myself at the opportunity of a private sneak-peak with the director himself, I really had no idea what to expect. The preview began and instantly my entire body began to resonate with a sensation I can only describe as the singing of my soul. When the preview ended, I was aware that my physical body remained seated, but I was simultaneously aware that another invisible part of me had fallen to her knees and was weeping on the floor. It took me at least three minutes to find the ability to speak in coherent sentences again.

Never before had anyone or anything spoken to my soul in such a profound way. It was truly a healing experience. As if a switch had been flipped, my intellect, with its non-stop chattering Good Tattoo Machines, melted away and I was transported to a sacred place buried deep within myself — a place where I remembered who I was and why I was here. I realized immediately that I was sitting in the presence of a master filmmaker with the ability to heal humanity. The funny thing is, he would be the last person to say this about himself. As a matter of fact, when asked recently what his motivation was he said, “I just love showing people a good time,” as if to say, “Doesn’t everybody?”

So it is with great excitement that I share with you now the same “private sneak-peek” that I once had and invite you to take a one-of-a-kind ride to your soul. In this week’s Wellness Experience™ video excerpt, you will be “riding the invisible” through the stunning beauty of Alaska. It is the second chapter from Echoes of Creation, featuring a custom music score by Grammy-nominated composer David Arkenstone. To enhance your experience: Find a quiet moment to fully immerse yourself without interruption. If possible, expand to “full screen,” HD 720p with quality speakers or stereo headphones.

This is just one of the inspirations to be found in the Wellness Experience™ film series. Two years in the making and featuring award-winning artists, it is a revolutionary new way to turn your TV, computer or mobile device into a virtual wellness center at the push of a button — the “play” button. Each week, here on GPS For The Soul, I will share another chapter from Echoes of Creation and Sacred Earth, two films that health and wellness experts are calling “a transcendent healing experience.” From ancient forests of Alaska to sacred lands of the American Southwest, each chapter will give you an entirely different experience of wellness from the next. It’s electric Panasonic office tower finally star

NEWARK — Construction on the Panasonic office tower in downtown Newark has begun, one year after the Japanese electronics giant signed a lease to move to the city and nearly two decades after a foundation was built for a development that never happened at the site.

Panasonic plans to relocate its North American headquarters from Secaucus into the 12-story, $200 million tower at the busy intersection of Raymond Boulevard and McCarter Highway next summer. The company will occupy 10 stories of the 338,000-square-foot building, and bring with it 800 employees, said spokesman Jim Reilly. Construction is expected to create 600 jobs.

Panasonic employees are excited about the building, and have been following the work so far through photos sent from Newark-based friends and business associates, Reilly said.

“Employees have been hearing about the move since April 2011 when we first announced it, so the feeling is now, ‘Cool. It’s finally really happening,’” Reilly said.

Yesterday morning, five truckloads of steel arrived at the site, and workers assembled the girders that will make up the building’s skeleton. About a dozen pieces of steel — the typical floor frames weigh about 1,700 pounds — were erected starting just after 1 p.m., said Andrew Cristi, an assistant project manager with Skanska USA Building.

There are already footings and a foundation at the site, which will be known as Two Riverfront Center and sits one block from Penn Station and adjacent to the Legal Center at One Riverfront Center. With suitable conditions, erecting the steel will take approximately four months, which is followed by installing a ribbed sheetmetal to span the gap from floor beam to floor beam Buy Chanel Dresses, laying steel reinforcement and pouring concrete for the floor slabs, Cristi said.

Last April, Panasonic signed a 15-year lease with the site’s owners, Matrix Development Group, based in Cranbury, and SJP Properties of Parsippany. The goal is to move in no later than August 2013, a timeframe that takes into account possible delays Buy Missoni Dresses, Reilly said.

But Panasonic’s decision to choose Newark did not happen overnight.

This photograph was taken from the top of One Newark Center’s Newark Club.

In February 2011, the state Economic Development Authority approved an Urban Transit Hub tax credit worth $102.4 million over 10 years for Panasonic if it brings at least 250 jobs to the site, creates at least 200 new jobs and locates the building within a half-mile of a public transportation center.

At the time, Panasonic was weighing other sites throughout the country and its chief executive officer, Joseph Taylor, had said Newark was not the most attractive location financially. He said he changed his mind after considering the city’s burgeoning development scene, its surrounding cultural venues and the environmental benefits of the new tower and its proximity to public transportation. The company is in the midst of working to become more “green” by its 100th anniversary in 2018.

Panasonic plans to incorporate many of its own technologies into the building, including solar power and energy management, Reilly said. There will also be an interactive technology center and showroom in the lobby to highlight Panasonic’s innovations.

The site itself has sat dormant for years, with plans for other buildings faltering dating back to the 1990s. Real estate players in Newark praised the new tower and what it means for Newark.

Frank Giantomasi, an attorney with Genova Burns Giantomasi & Webster who handled the project’s site plans, said he came into Newark on Sunday just to see the crane at work without weekday traffic.

“That crane is symbolic of development,” Giantomasi said. “(The project) is an ignition switch for Newark, and for regional development generally.”

Matrix acquired the land in 2003 for $5 million, giving it control of nearly 10 waterfront acres it had steadily amassed since 2001 for a mixed-used project that would also include residential and retail projects.

Spy Shots2011 Lamborghini Jota

May 15th, 2012

For a company with only two principal model lines, Lamborghini sure has been busy lately. The limited run of Reventon seven-figure supercars are still rolling off the line, the Gallardo LP560-4 is reaching the market, the crowds at the Paris Motor Show were wowed by the four-door Estoque concept, there’s an anticipated Superveloce (SV) version of the Murcielago on its way, and all the while, the team at Sant’Agata has been working on an all-new supercar. Sources differ on whether the new model, tentatively known as the Jota (reviving a classic Lamborghini nameplate) will emerge as another limited-edition ultra-car to rival the Ferrari Enzo or whether it will serve as the replacement for the aging Murcielago. The latter has been on the market for about seven years now in various iterations, the original breeding the Roadster, the LP640 revision, a handful of Versace editions and the aforementioned Reventon. But Lambo has known for a while now that its supercar Tattoo Supplies, as eminently desirable as it remains, is due for replacement.

The spy shots, snapped (where else) at the Nürburgring, show a test mule running with Murcielago bodywork, only with a few key modifications that betray its secret identity like Clark Kent caught without his glasses. For starters, the wheels are bearing what appears to be some sort of telemetry hubs. The vehicle also appears even wider than the linebacker Murcielago, and the vents behind the side windows have a different shape. Eyewitness accounts suggest the new Raging Bull will wear lightweight carbon fiber bodywork Tattoo Supplies, except for the doors and roof, which seems like an odd choice. The Reventon-inspired bodywork is expected to be laid over an aluminum spaceframe to replace the current Murcielago’s outdated and overweight steel tub. We expect the vehicle to retain its all-wheel-drive system – by now a hallmark of modern Lambos – with power coming from the latest version of the company’s perennial V12, but with the potential addition of direct injection for improved power delivery. Whether the car in question will emerge as yet another limited version of the existing Murcielago or its anticipated replacement will become clearer as we get closer to its anticipated debut in two years as a 2011 model. But our money’s on the latter.

Toyota supports Detroit 3’s pleas for bailout buck

May 14th, 2012

Toyota doesn’t want one of the Detroit 3 to fail. Despite the fact that the Japanese automaker is a direct competitor and seemingly stands to gain long-term sales from the collapse of at least one of its American competitors Replica Christian Audigier Clothes, the reality is that it would be a major headache for the entire industry. The largest issue may be that a Detroit collapse Discount Herve Leger gown, especially of General Motors Buy Emilio Pucci Dresses, would take a number of key suppliers down with it — suppliers that Toyota relies upon just as much as any other automaker.

Toyota DKNY Clothes sale, Honda and Nissan all call the U.S. market their largest, so these import car companies require the American economy to remain strong in order to keep sales figures and profits relatively healthy. The loss of hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of jobs would be a major blow to the already struggling U.S. economy and could also cause additional import backlash.

The last potential problem facing the Japanese automakers is a possible takeover of an American automaker by another competitor Cheap Herve Leger v neck, likely from China or India Christian Audigier Clothes sale, that could flood the market with low-cost cars. The last successful influx of competition came from Korea in the form of Hyundai and Kia, and Toyota isn’t looking forward to losing market share to another set of automakers any sooner than necessary.

Afghanistan Takes a Deadly Turn

May 14th, 2012

The Los Angeles Timesleads with news that seven U.S. troops were killed in Afghanistan yesterday, the highest one-day death toll in nearly a year. Military officials warn that American casualties are likely to increase as more troops get sent to Afghanistan. According to an independent tally Cheap Missoni Dresses, 95 U.S. and 76 coalition troops have died in Afghanistan this year. Three other NATO soldiers Herve Leger sale, one from Britain and two from Canada, were also killed yesterday. Five British troops have been killed in the past week. The Wall Street Journalleads its worldwide newsbox with the more than 20,000 security personnel deployed in Urumqi, China, where at least 156 people died and more than 1,000 were injured in Sunday’s clashes between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese. USA Todayleads with a look at how banks are cutting back on credit card lending. In the first four months of the year Cheap BCBG Dresses, the number of new cards issued by banks plunged 38 percent from the same time last year, while the average limit that low-risk borrowers receive has decreased 3 percent.

The New York Timesand Washington Postlead with President Obama and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev reaching an agreement to cut their strategic nuclear arsenals by as much as a third. The basic outlines of a treaty that would replace the one set to expire in December would “reduce the number of warheads and missiles to the lowest levels since the early years of the cold war,” notes the NYT. The two presidents spent most of their time talking about Iran and missile defense, and agreed to work together on an assessment of the nuclear threat posed by Iran and North Korea. While Russia is still vehemently opposed to American plans to build a missile defense system in Eastern Europe, the two leaders found some room for compromise by agreeing to cooperate more on the issue and step up discussions on a joint center to detect hostile missile launches. Obama appeared to continue in his efforts to try to empower Medvedev over Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, whom he met with this morning.

The U.S. servicemembers who were killed Monday were in different areas of the country. Two were killed in the south, one in the east, and four in the north. The Post highlights that the southern part of the country that is now the scene of a huge Marine operation has remained relatively peaceful and U.S. officials believe the Taliban may have left the area. Meanwhile, the attacks against American troops in other parts of the country show how the militants are determined to push into areas that had so far been relatively quiet. The LAT reminds readers that there was also an increase in American deaths in Iraq right after the “surge,” but that soon began to decrease. Of course Karen Millen Dresses sale, there’s no way of knowing whether Afghanistan will follow the same pattern, but at least in the short term an increase in casualties seems inevitable. “The reason is not so much the troop increase but what they want to do and where they want to go,” an expert tells the LAT. “They are focusing on the areas that are least governed and most insurgency-filled.”

It’s not clear whether the majority of the people killed Sunday in China were protesters, security forces, or simply bystanders. State television showed images of Uighurs attacking Han Chinese but, of course, didn’t say anything about violence from the police. The city’s cell phone and Internet services have been largely cut, and security forces were sent to other large cities in the region to prevent the unrest from spreading. The WSJ notes that Beijing’s actions in the next few days “could have major repercussions both at home and abroad.” If the state’s response is seen as too repressive, foreign governments may condemn the action. But if Han Chinese think the state is letting the Uighurs off easy then there could be a domestic backlash. Just like last year when Chinese officials pinned the unrest in Tibet to the Dalai Lama, this time around a Uighur exile living in Washington was blamed.

In an interesting piece inside, the NYT takes a look at how Chinese information officials seem to have picked up lessons from last year’s clashes in Tibet as well as the recent unrest in Iran. Last year, foreign journalists were banned from Tibet, but images of the riots still got out, and China faced worldwide condemnation. This time around, reporters were invited to go to Xinjiang “to know better about the riots.” Of course, the reporters were told they couldn’t conduct interviews without government minders but it was still a sophisticated effort to spin the news, rather than just block it. That’s not to say the news wasn’t blocked as the government also carried out a massive operation to prevent the issue from being discussed on the Internet. “They’re getting more sophisticated,” one expert said. “They learn from past mistakes.”

The WSJ fronts word that the Department of Justice is looking into whether AT&T and Verizon are abusing their market power. It’s not a formal investigation just yet, but the paper sees it as a prime example of how the Obama administration wants to ramp up antitrust enforcement after the issue was practically ignored during the Bush years. Justice is expected to look into such things as whether the carriers unfairly lock up phones through exclusive deals and whether they unfairly prevent customers from using certain services on their networks Buy Chanel Dresses, such as Internet calling. Experts say this investigation is particularly instructive because it shows the Obama administration believes more than one company can exercise monopolistic power over an industry.

The LAT Cheap DKNY Dresses, NYT, and WP all front the death of Robert McNamara, the former secretary of defense that led the massive buildup of American forces in Vietnam between 1964 and 1968. Later in life, he went public with his regrets about the war’s escalation. Serving Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, McNamara “was the most influential defense secretary of the 20th century,” declares the NYT. He was 93 and died in his sleep.

USAT fronts a look at how the recession has increased the number of people interested in donating their sperm or eggs. But many lose interest once they find out it’s a long process that eliminates most people. The donor coordinator at a fertility clinic in New Jersey said she used to get about eight calls a week from potential egg donors but now gets that many every day. She also said that at least 100 men have called to ask about donating their “eggs.”
